Un film sulla vita e i tempi del leggendario 'ragazzo cattivo' punk di Belfast Terri Hooley va in produzione il mese prossimo, per gentile concessione del produttore esecutivo, Gary Lightbody frontman degli Snow Patrol, e il produttore David Holmes.
Il film, che racconta dei tempi di Hooley come manager degli The Undertones, ha assunto Steve Coogan e Robert Sheehan di Killing Bono come protagonisti, con l'attore di Belfast Richard Dormer - acclamato dalla critica per il suo ruolo di Alex Higgins nella rappresentazione teatrale Hurricane - nel ruolo principale.
Il titolo del film, Good Vibrations, è basato sul confine di Hooley-che attraversa la casa discografica e il negozio di dischi che ha aperto a Belfast durante i Troubles.
Hooley ha fatto il suo nome come manager della band che ha inviato una copia dell'Undertones' Teenage Kicks al defunto, e pionieristico, DJ radio John Peel e ha portato la band, con il cantante Feargal Sharkey, a raggiungere la fama internazionale.
Hooley rilasciò il singolo con la sua etichetta fatta in casa e Peel l'ha trasmessa senza sosta, assicurando il suo posto nella fama del punk e ha portato alla band a garantirsi un contratto discografico nel 1978.
Parlando al Belfast Telegraph ieri sera, Terri ha detto: "Non ci posso credere... E' stato 10 anni a venire. Circa un decennio fa sono caduto per una pinta veloce al Crown Bar e mi sono imbattuto nello [scrittore] Glenn Patterson e due produttori di RTE e ci siamo associati.
"Due giorni dopo Glenn è tornato da me e ha detto, 'La storia della tua vita farebbe un grande film'."
Patterson ha contribuito a scrivere la sceneggiatura con Colin Carbery.
I 10 anni di attesa furono, in parte, causati da Hooley e Patterson che hanno rifiutato due compagnie cinematografiche di Dublino - una che coinvolge Kathy McGuinnes, moglie di Paul McGuinnes manager degli U2 - perché a loro non piaceva il modo in cui interpretavano il copione, e, in un altro tentativo di produzione, i finanziamenti della British Film Board furono ridotti da un taglio del governo.
Anche Canale 4 era interessato ma le trattative sono arrivate a un punto morto riguardo il controllo creativo.
Il film ora è finanziato dalla BBC Film in associazione con l'Irish FIlm Board.
Il 'Padrino del Punk' era il soggetto di una campagna di Facebook l'anno scorso per farlo eleggere come sindaco di Belfast dopo che MLA Naoli Long si è dimesso.
Secondo Gary Lightbody degli Snow Patrol, Hooley è "una vita vissuta alla velocità della luce".
"Terri è il padrino del punk nordirlandese," dice Lightbody. "Ha vissuto una vita pazza, una vita molto oscura ed esilarante.
"Sono davvero contento che non sia più un sogno irrealizzabile. Terri è un eroe sconosciuto e non è mai svanito.
"Anche quando gli Undertones sono stati firmati da Seymour Stein per £60.000 - un carico di me*** di denaro in quei giorni - Terri non avrebbe preso un soldo e alla fine si stabilì per un furgone scadente da £500."
Lo scorso anno scrivendo per il Belfast Telegraph Saturday Review riguardo la morte di Sid Vicious dei Sex Pistols, Hooley ricordò la volta che tirò un pugno in faccia a John Lennon durante una discussione dulla situazione politica nell'Irlanda del nord.
Il negozio Good Vibration originale di Hooley fu bruciato qualche anno fa, ma ha riaperto e oggi si possono ancora trovare vendite di CD e vecchi vinili nello Smithfield Market di Belfast.
Ha ricevuto un Irish Music Industry Award nel 1994.
Parte del film sarà girato in una location a Dundalk, Co Louth, perché, come dice Terri scherzosamente, Belfast "sembra troppo bella ora per essere rappresentare quello che sembrava nei giorni del movimento punk che è stato all'altezza dei Troubles".
Gli undertones si sono formati a Derry nel 1975, rilasciando 13 singoli e quattro album, e sono scesi come come una delle influenze fondamentali del movimento punk.
Il loro omonimo album di debutto è stato votato dalla rivista Q magazine come uno dei 100 più grandi album di tutti i tempi.
Teenage Kicks fu rilasciato di nuovo nel maggio 1994 ma è riuscito solo marginalmente a entrare nelle classifiche del Regno Unito. Viene, però, trasmessa costantemente dalle stazioni radio di tutto il Regno Unito e Irlanda.
La formazione originale si sciolse nel 1983 dopo che Sharkey la lasciò per intraprendere una carriera da solista e andò avanti avendo un enorme successo con A Good heart (Is Hard To Find).
I restanti quattro membri riformarono la band nel 1999 con Paul McLoone come cantante e oggi suonano ancora, avendo rilasciato due album di materiale originale.
Oggi, Sharkey lavora come consulente musicale per una serie di agenzie leader del Regno Unito.

Story of Terri Hooley, Belfast's godfather of punk, to hit silver screen
A film about the life and times of Belfast's legendary punk 'bad boy' Terri Hooley goes into production next month, courtesy of executive producer, Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody, and producer David Holmes.
The movie, which tells the story of Hooley's times as manager of The Undertones, has recruited Steve Coogan and Killing Bono's Robert Sheehan to star, with Belfast actor Richard Dormer - who won critical acclaim for his role as Alex Higgins in the stage play Hurricane - in the lead role.
The movie's title, Good Vibrations, is based on the name of Hooley's boundary-crossing recording label and record shop which he opened in Belfast during the Troubles.
Hooley made his name as the band manager who sent a copy of the Undertones' Teenage Kicks to the late, and pioneering, radio DJ John Peel and it led to the band, with lead singer Feargal Sharkey, finding international fame.
Hooley released the single on his own home-grown label and Peel played it relentlessly, ensuring its place in punk's hall of fame and leading to the band securing a record deal in 1978.
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph last night, Terri said: "I can't believe it... it's been 10 years coming. About a decade ago I dropped in for a quick pint to the Crown Bar and I bumped into [novelist] Glenn Patterson and two producers from RTE and we had a couple.
"Two days later Glenn came back to me and said, 'Your life story would make a great movie'.''
Patterson has co-written the script with Colin Carberry.
The 10-year wait was, in part, due to Hooley and Patterson turning down two Dublin-based film companies - one involving Kathy McGuinness, wife of U2 manager Paul McGuinness - because they did not like how they were interpreting the script, and, in another attempt at production, funding from the British Film Board was axed in government cutbacks.
Channel 4 were also interested but talks came to a dead end over creative control.
The film is now being financed by BBC Films in association with the Irish Film Board.
The 'Godfather of Punk' was the subject of a Facebook campaign last year to get him elected as Lord Mayor of Belfast after MLA Naomi Long stepped down.
ccording to Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, Hooley is "a life lived at light speed''.
"Terri is the godfather of Northern Ireland punk,'' says Lightbody. "He lived a crazy life, a really dark, hilarious life.
"I'm really pleased it's not a pipe dream any more. Terri's an unsung hero and he has never sold out.
"Even when the Undertones were signed by Seymour Stein for £60,000 - a sh**load of money in those days - Terri wouldn't take any cash and settled in the end for a rubbish £500 van.''
Writing for the Belfast Telegraph Saturday Review last year about the death of The Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious, Hooley recalled the time he punched John Lennon in the face during an argument over the political situation in Northern Ireland.
Hooley's original Good Vibrations shop was burnt down some years ago, but he re-opened and today can still be found selling CDs and old vinyl in Belfast's Smithfield Market.
He received an Irish Music Industry Award in 1994.
Part of the movie will be shot on location in Dundalk, Co Louth, because, as Terri says jokingly, Belfast "looks too good now to be representative of how it looked back in the days of the punk movement which was at the height of the Troubles''.
The Undertones formed in Derry in 1975, releasing 13 singles and four albums, and have gone down as one of the seminal influences of the punk movement.
Their eponymous debut album was voted by Q magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Teenage Kicks was released again in May 1994 but only marginally managed to break into the UK charts. It is still, though, a constant player on radio stations throughout the UK and Ireland.
The original line-up disbanded in 1983 after Sharkey left to pursue a solo career and went on to score a massive hit with A Good Heart (Is Hard To Find).
The remaining four members reformed in 1999 with Paul McLoone as lead singer and still perform today, having released two albums of original material.
Today, Sharkey works as a music consultant for a number of leading UK agencies.
